Mini cruise across the Adriatic sea from Korčula town to Rijeka including overnight stay on board

Waiting patiently in Korčula town to board the Marko Polo, a member of the fleet of Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija

The international ferry of shipping company Jadrolinija also calls at Hvar town on the island of the same name
Shortly before we arrived in Rijeka by car-ferry early in the morning there was a beautiful sunrise

In the morning of May 7th 2009 Anita and the webmaster woke up in an apartment in Korčula in Dalmatia on the island of the same name. It was the apartment of the kind Blitvić family. Today we were going to have a mini cruise on board of the international car-ferry Marko Polo, that left the harbour of bari in Italy, now came from Dubrovnik which and was going to take us to Rijeka in Northern Croatia, where we would be arriving on Friday at 07.00 am. This Thursday we would have until 14.30h to enjoy the old town of Korčula
First of all we needed a good breakfast, so we took a seat on one of the waterside terraces. The sun was shining brightly. We enjoyed our brunch with a view across Pelješki kanal. In the distance peak Sveti Ilija on the peninsula. Main attraction however was a Croatian song from the speakers right above us, that we use to sing along at home: konoba moja, my tavern. We visited the Jadrolinija office to get the tickets for the transfer and the reservation for the cabin for the overnight stay including dinner and breakfast. Then it became about time to get back to the apartment, take our car and queue up to get on the boat.
Being on board first of all we enjoyed the departure from Korčula from the top deck. In the year before we did not even think of the fact that this car-ferry would berth in the old town, but that Dominće was the only location to do so. We took some photos for our album and then we went examining our cabin. As expected our sleeping place consisted of a bunk bed. The roaring of the engines was quite well hearable, so the rest at night could become a problem. After dropping the bag in the cabin we took a seat on the upper deck and enjoyed the view from the sun-flooded Korčula channel, in local language Korčulanski kanal. We passed the island Pokonji Dol with the lighthouse on it. The next stop was going to be Stari Grad on Hvar island. From there the car-ferry headed for Split on the Dalmatian continent, which was going to be the last stop, before we would be sailing into the night. For the last time we were able to enjoy the sight of the Palace of Roman emperor Diocletian, the cathedral of St. Domnius and the Biokovo mountains, at least for this year. Then it was time to enjoy our dinner in the restaurant on board of Jadrolinija car-ferry Marko Polo. That was tasty. Outside it was getting dark. After dinner we sat down on a couch in the ship's lounge. There were travellers who slept even on it. Did we actually need to reserve a cabin? It was a new experience anyway? As expected, the webmaster did not sleep too much that night. In the morning we witnessed a beautiful sunrise in the Kvarner region in front of the coast at Rijeka. We drove our car on the continent and headed for Ljubljana and Austria where had the last overnight stay of the holiday at Altenmarkt/Zauchensee.
