Muschel Tag Yerseke auf Deutsch
Mosseldag Yerseke in het Nederlands
2011: Attention: for security reasons the Rock event will take place two weeks later!
On the third Saturday of August the annual Mussel day in Yerseke in Holland in the province of Zeeland takes place. Mussels all you can eat. Mussel lovers enjoy the cheap yet large portions of Zeelandic mussels cooked in large soup pots and served in a take away box at a symbolic price of only two and a half Euro in the harbour of Yerseke, which is almost for free. (Note from the webmaster: in 2010 the price for a portion was only 1,-.) This year I did not forget a small bottle of garlic and whiskey sauce which is good company for mussels. Looks like we ordered a portion of mussels to much. Though it is all about mussels today, every year there are also other things but eating mussels to do, like hanging around at the flea and street market and even better, the live music event Mussel rock on the car park area. We went there because we missed the free trip with on fishing boat on the Eastern Scheldt. We expected the free trip would take place twice. The transport from the railway station Kruiningen-Yerseke to the start of the flea market in Yerseke is taken care of by the local public transport company Connexxion and they offer to take the mussel lovers to and from the harbour of Yerseke for one ticket for only 4,-. We also benefited from the ticket to get back from Yerseke to the railway station, but before taking the train from there we made a nice walk towards the other side and suddenly found ourselves on the bank of the Western Scheldt. There we laid back in the grass and watched the ships go by from the north sea to the harbour of Antwerp and vice versa. At about 9.00 pm we were back in Bergen op Zoom, where we booked a room in hotel Golden tulip. Bergen op Zoom is closer to Yerseke than Middelburg for example. In this capital of the province of Zeeland there was no more room available and only a few people like the webmaster thought of the province of Brabantic and Bergen op Zoom to look for a room to stay the night. Beside the Mussel day in Yerseke, for people fond of this seafood, there is also the annual mussel festival in Philippine, where we are invited to almost every year by our friends living in that village close to the Belgian border. The mussel festival in Philippine takes place every complete last weekend of August.
